Executing a Fundamental Layup details and highlights the proper execution of a fundamentally sound underhand, overhand, power and protective layup from both the right and left sides of the basket.
Key Points of Focus
- Execute layups from both the right and left side of the basket.
- Work to develop their ability to execute layups with the right and the left hand.
- Be able to execute a layup without traveling with the basketball.
- Be able to pick up the dribble, take two transitionary steps and then complete the layup by executing an underhand, overhand, power and a protective layup.
- Generate upward lift off the court (when jumping) be lifting the same leg as the shooting arm when extending to the basket.
- Always jump of the foot opposite the shooting hand when executing an underhand and overhand layup.
- Visual focus should be placed on the spot on the backboard where the player desires to lay the basketball off of in order to put the ball into the basket.
- Visual focus should be maintained until the ball goes through the net.
- Attention and practice should be given to becoming proficient with the underhand, overhand and power layup.
- As skill level and strength increases the protective layup practiced can be implemented.
- Always strive to make every layup you attempt.
