One Minute Mid-Range Shooting Challenge
A key skill for any basketball player is the ability to shoot the basketball from any given point on the perimeter of court.
Improve your ability to knock down multiple mid-range jump shots with consistent game-like movement and composure in a one minute time period. Develop your ability to convert your free throw under pressure while also learning to finish strong with a layup or dunk.
The player will start with the basketball underneath the basket. The player will set the clock to one (1) minute.
- The player will run and follow the toss of the ball, catch the basketball, execute a proper catch and pivot move, step into their shooting rhythm and execute a mid-range jump shot by shooting the basketball into the basket.
- The player will focus on going at game speed while remaining under control with each shot.
- The player will stay relaxed through each shot and then proceed to get the basketball once they have safely landed after executing each shot.
- The player will then retrieve the basketball and return to the same position.
- The player will repeat this process until they have made two (2) shots from the mid-range corner position.
- Once the player has made two (2) mid-range corner jump shots, they will transition to the wing position working to execute two (2) made mid-range wing shots.
- The player will continue this process until they have made two (2) mid-range jump shots from each corner position, each wing position and one from straight in front of the basket (between the free throw line and the top of the key).
- When the player makes the last mid-range jump shot from the corner, they must sprint to retrieve the basketball and then sprint to the free throw line were they will then execute a made free throw.
- After a made free throw the player must retrieve the basketball, sprint to either free throw elbow line with the basketball while performing a speed dribble, then pivot and finish the drill with a layup or dunk.
Players should target to execute this drill within the one (1) minute time limit.
Skill to Drill Emphasis:
- Players should focus on executing proper perimeter shooting fundamentals. Proper catch and pivot, body position, shooting rhythm, follow-through, release and rotation, while focusing on the basket will be key in working to simulate game speed when executing ten (10) made mid-range jump shots in a one (1) minute time period.
- Execute all shots at game speed without rushing to get your shot off. The key is to execute quality shots as opposed to quantity of shots. Make each shot count.
- Take your time in shooting your free throw. Even though you are tired, your legs are heavy and you are winded…you must focus on executing your free throw routine so you knock down the shot. Don’t focus on having to rush to beat the one (1) minute time limit. Execute a proper free throw by going through your routine then proceed forward at game speed to retrieve the basketball out of the net.
- Hit the layup or slam it home with a dunk. Just because it is the last portion of the drill and you feel it is the easiest…don’t neglect to make your layup. Focus on making this shot then you can celebrate because you beat the one (1) minute timer. If you miss, follow up your miss and shoot the layup again until you make it, then the time can be stopped.
- If you are over the one (1) minute time limit, don’t fret. Use your overage as a motivator. Work to shave that time off of your next attempt as you work to better your shooting percentage.
